Coffee morning to raise awareness of coeliac disease

To highlight Gut feeling Week, 13th-19th May,  Longniddry are having a coffee morning on Sat 11th May 10.30-12 noon to raise awareness of coeliac disease.


1 in 100 people have coeliac disease however only 1 in 8 of those with the condition is diagnosed.

All our baking will be gluten free & we will have information & helpful tips for sufferers.

To celebrate the 175th anniversary of John Muir's birth, members of Musselburgh book group read a book of his writings, and were then taken around the grounds of Newhailes house by National Trust ranger Stewart Whittaker

Young writer of the year competition

Win prizes: Writing Competition for Children.


Encouraged by the large number of entries to the ‘Young Writer of the Year’ competition last year, Tyne and Esk Writers, in partnership with East Lothian and Midlothian library services, is running this event this year.
If you are under 16 and interested in writing, you are invited to enter the competition. Your story or poem can be about any subject and you could win a great prize. The competition is being sponsored by the Scottish Seabird Centre and Awards for All. The winners in each section will receive a family day pass to the Scottish Seabird Centre as well as a £10 book token. The overall winners in both the primary and secondary section will also receive an iPod Shuffle.
There are two groups of entry for children and young people who live or go to school in East Lothian and Midlothian: P4 – P7 and S1-S4 and two sets of prizes, one for East Lothian and one for Midlothian in best poetry and best prose. The main judge of the competition is Tom Murray, the Creative Writing Fellow for Tyne and Esk Writers.

Entry forms will be available in schools and libraries in East Lothian and Midlothian by the 8 April.

Willie Wood, The Calder brothers and Joe Forte enjoy reminiscing in Haddington


Professional  lawn bowls champion and Commonwealth games gold medal winner Willie Wood, MBE, made a guest appearance at a recent Sports reminiscence session in the John Gray Centre, Haddington. Pictured here with just some of his many medals, Willie was delighted to share some of his memories with members of the group.  They’ve also enjoyed the company recently of twins Jim and Finlay Calder, former Scottish rugby internationalists and the other day Joe Forte, owner of the Sports shop in Haddington called in. Joe is an ex-professional footballer and has completed over 20 marathons.

The reminiscence group, intended mainly for gentlemen over 60 years, has proved to be tremendously popular. They meet in the Star room, John Gray Centre, at 10.00am every Tuesday morning and at half time enjoy a pie and Bovril.
