Readers Day

Readers Day at Haddington library at the John Gray Centre on Saturday 1st December is finalised.

We’re delighted that Alistair Moffat, director of Lennoxlove and Borders book festivals, Marie Macpherson and Peter Kerr have agreed to be our special guests.

Alistair will be discussing a project he’s been working on for some time, “On the Edge of beyond: Scotland’s Ancestral DNA”. It’s absolutely fascinating and not to be missed.

Marie launched her debut novel, “First blast of the trumpet” at the John Gray Centre recently. This is a highly entertaining exploration of the early life of John Knox. If, like me, you find it hard to imagine him as a young man, then read this and prepare to be enthralled! This book is especially interesting to us, given that a lot of it takes place in and around East Lothian.

Peter has also ventured into the world of historical fiction with his new novel, “Song of the Eight winds”, an epic tale of 13th century Mallorca, featuring Moorish pirates and breathtaking Mediterranean scenery.

As if this wasn’t enough to tempt you, we’ll be having a literary “pub” quiz, tour of the museum, book swap and musical entertainment from “Sangstream”, Edinburgh based Scots folk choir, to end the evening.

This year you’ll be treated to mulled wine on arrival, and about 5pm we’ll be having a two course meal, with wine.

The event is from 3.00pm to 8.00pm.

Tickets are £7.50, available at the library counter or phone 01620 820680

New Tranent Library

The new library building in Tranent has now been open for one month. There have been lots of new people through the doors (especially as we now share the building with our Customer Service colleagues) so now you can borrow a book, pay your rent and get advice on benefits all from the same place! Opening hours have also been increased - we are open all day on a wednesday and no longer close at lunchtime.

The new building holds lots more stock plus there is much more space for everyone with lots of natural light. Kids have a dedicated space complete with a kiddy size sofa, you can have a coffee while you read the paper at your leisure, there are 6 public computers now upgraded to Windows 7 and a community meeting room which can be booked.

So what are you waiting for - come down to Winton Place today to find out for yourself!
